Cognitive Reflection and Decision Making
P eople with higher cognitive ability (or “IQ”) differ from those with lower cognitive ability in a variety of important and unimportant ways. On average, they live longer, earn more, have larger working memories, faster reaction times and are more susceptible to visual illusions (Jensen, 1998). Despite the diversity of phenomena related to IQ, few have attempted to understand—or even describe—...
متن کاملAn Axiomatization of Cumulative Prospect Theory for Decision Under Risk
Cumulative prospect theory was introduced by Tversky and Kahneman so as to combine the empirical realism of their original prospect theory with the theoretical advantages of Quiggin’s rank-dependent utility. Preference axiomatizations were provided in several papers. All those axiomatizations, however, only consider decision under uncertainty. No axiomatization has been provided as yet for deci...

متن کاملProspect theory on the brain? Toward a cognitive neuroscience of decision under risk.
Most decisions must be made without advance knowledge of their consequences. Economists and psychologists have devoted much attention to modeling decisions made under conditions of risk in which options can be characterized by a known probability distribution over possible outcomes. The descriptive shortcomings of classical economic models motivated the development of prospect theory (D. Kahnem...
متن کاملDecision Making Under Risk: A Prescriptive Approach
This article takes the form of a research proposal. The paper seeks to address the problem faced by investors of how best to deal with decision making under risk. The methodology utilizes a normative model from economics—expected utility theory—and a descriptive model from psychology—prospect theory—to formulate a rational but realistic compromise between the two: a prescriptive model of risk p...
